Cross-Links News
Buckland seems to crop up in the local press regularly. Most recently there have been news stories regarding the Buckland Together community initiative. Buckland Together is an informal multi-agency partnership that has been the channel for making some positive changes in the Buckland area. This is recognised by the Police and local Authority as a good community development model and they are now in the process of setting up similar 'Together' groups around the District. Buckland Together received a Home Office 'Respect' Award in April in recognition of the efforts being made.
Where does Cross-Links fit into all this? Well I have the privilege of chairing two of the three sub-groups and am a member of the Executive committee. Cross-Links is one of a handful of local organisations or groups actually situated on the estate and so we are well placed to promote local events and initiatives. We have the flexibility to support the needs of the community and facilitate the work of Buckland Together too. We've recently been awarded £3.8k from the Faith communities Capacity Building Fund which we will use in support of Buckland Together. We've also received £2.7k from the extended schools budget to support our after school activities with local children.
We continue to explore what it means to be a follower of Jesus amid the trials and tribulations of daily life. A small group meet with us regularly to explore these challenges and to grow in our own discipleship. The monthly Café Church and weekly Cell group are key elements in this.
The decision to close the primary schools and form a new school for Buckland has been made. However, for the first academic year starting this September children will continue to attend the two existing school sites but as one new school. Being a member of the Interim Governing Body I can honestly say that this is a challenge and a half and we need your prayerful support.
At the time of writing we have not yet completed our registration as a charity. This is partly due to some additional work we were required to undertake as part of our application. It is only a matter of time before we receive our registration.
We continue to see people of all ages throughout the week in our Day Centre/Café, the after school clubs and Parent & Toddler group. Since the health visitor began attending our weekly Toddler group we have seen the numbers attending almost double.
Please continue to pray for God's work in Buckland and the surrounding area.

Neighbourhood action
Buckland Together is a local project set up two years ago after a small group of residents got together to try and do something about the problems they were experiencing.
A newly appointed police community support officer, PCSO Katie Parker-Brown, started working with the group resulting in a PACT project (Partners and Communities Together).
The PACT process involves a number of local agencies, including the police, working together to solve local problems and is an important part of neighbourhood policing.
Buckland Together were able to make a huge difference to their community by organising neighbourhood clean-ups, setting up residents groups and making sure there were activities for young people.
Commitment
The group also received a further honour recently when they were presented with a District Commander's Certificate of Merit by Chief Inspector Roy Cottam from Kent Police. He said: 'I am delighted the Canadian Estate has been successful in getting this RESPECT award, it is certainly well deserved.
'The Buckland community has really pulled together and taken a stand. They have become the most effective weapon in tackling anti-social behaviour and shown real commitment, drive and courage.'
