Buckland Areas
St Radigund's exists on the east side of Dover bordering Buckland ward along the middle of London Road. It stretches Westwards towards Folkestone continuing along Abbey Road as far as the St Radigund's Abbey it is named after which is infact named after a Germanic saint called 'St Radegund' who when she was young fled the attempt to marry her off to a Germanic King. The ward includes Dover's hospital, the Buckland Hospital which was a former Victorian Workhouse, and the Poulton Close industrial estate which comprises many local businesses as well as the Coombe Valley Racing Track where numerous banger racing events happen throughout the year.
Charlton on the other hand is today no longer a village in its own right, but used to start where Ladywell goes from London Road to Maison Dieu Road. This was the former boundary of the parish of Dover and Buckland. Today however the area is part of Dover town centre and comprises the 'village' green of Charlton Green surrounding the historic Red Lion Inn and St Peter and St Paul Church. Other aspects of village life include the Castleton Retail Park and Charlton Shopping Centre. Other pubs include 'The Eagle', 'The Kingfisher' and the 'Louis Armstrong'. Charlton today is an important part of Dover town centre and includes the former Royal Victoria Hospital now housing.
Barton used to be a seperate ward from Buckland until 2001. It is now half in Buckland ward and half within Tower Hamlets ward. The area is the former village of Barton which was in the late 19th Century converted into a Victorian estate of handsome houses, recreating the village from a small settlement along Barton Back Lane and into a sprawling suburb into Dover along the now named Barton Road (formerly Barton Back Lane) and Frith Road (former Love Lane). The area comprises Barton Junior School and Charlton Primary School as well as St Edmund's Catholic School, a college for the performing arts.
Today however as these areas have no specific identity, and no governmental ward like that of Buckland and St Radigund's they are generally accepted as being part of Dover but were once thriving villages in the Dour valley in their own rights.
